How does Objectivism differ from conservatism?

Objectivism and conservatism may agree on some political issues, but they do not rest on the same foundation.

Conservatism often argues from tradition, religion, inherited moral codes, national custom, or social stability. Objectivism argues from reality, reason, individual rights, rational self-interest, productive work, and the moral purpose of human happiness.

That difference matters.

Objectivism does not defend freedom because “this is how we used to do things.” It defends freedom because a human being needs liberty in order to think, act, produce, trade, love, speak, and pursue happiness. Rights do not come from government, tradition, or God. They come from human nature and the requirements of a rational life.

Objectivism also rejects faith as a foundation for politics. A conservative may defend religion as socially useful or morally necessary. Objectivism says morality does not require religion. A rational morality is based on life, health, reason, responsibility, love, productivity, and happiness. Church and State must remain separate because mixing religion with government undermines liberty.

Economically, Objectivism defends capitalism not merely because it “works,” but because it is moral. Capitalism is the system of individual freedom, property rights, value creation, and voluntary exchange. It rewards production and competence. It rejects coercion, redistribution, dependency, and political favoritism.

Objectivism also rejects collectivism in every form — including collectivism wrapped in conservative language. The individual is not to be sacrificed to the nation, family, church, tradition, race, class, party, or majority.

So the plain answer is this: conservatism often tries to preserve selected values from the past. Objectivism asks whether those values are true, rational, life-serving, and proper to the individual.

Where conservatism is pro-reason, pro-rights, pro-capitalism, and pro-freedom, Objectivism may agree with it.

Where conservatism rests on faith, tradition, authority, sacrifice, or social control, Objectivism rejects it.
